WP2.2 – Recovery and Reuse of Raw Materials from Biomass and Food By-products (WP Leader: Athanassia Athanassiou)

The WP leverages sustainable technologies to convert plant biomass and food waste into useful raw materials and composites.
The work package is structured into two tasks:

  • Task 2.2.1 – Green chemistry processing of plant biomass for raw materials recovery and biocomposites production (Task Leader: Gabriele Nanni)
  • Task 2.2.2 – Pyrolytic conversion of biomass to hydrogen-rich gas, composites, and ionic liquids (Task Leader: Sergio Bocchini)

WP2.3 – Biological Routes for Recovery of Raw Materials and Development of New Materials (WP Leader: Athanassia Athanassiou)

The WP explores how natural processes and engineered biological systems can be used to extract and reprocess materials, including plastics and critical metals.
The work package is structured into four tasks:

  • Task 2.3.1 – Enzymatic processes for the modification, recovery and re-use of building blocks of natural origin (Task Leader: Luca Pandolfini)
  • Task 2.3.2 – Computational-assisted enzymatic decomposition of plastics and bioplastics for recovery of monomers and oligomers or compostability optimization (Task Leader: Marco De Vivo)
  • Task 2.3.3 – Bio-recovery of lithium and other critical metals from seawater brine and e-waste (Task Leader: Annalisa Abdel Azim)
  • Task 2.3.4 – Novel uses of spent biomass from fermentation processes (Task Leader: Christina Oikonomou)

The WP aims to improve recycling methods through precision engineering and the use of green additives, enabling the transformation of plastic waste into new functional materials. 
The work package is structured into two tasks:

  • Task 2.4.1 – Chemical recycling by thermal decomposition (Task Leader: Sergio Bocchini)
  • Task 2.4.2 – Mechanical recycling with green additives to enhance the properties of the recycled materials (Task Leader: Giacomo Tedeschi)
