Freshwater Recovery from Unconventional Sources - WPs

WP5.1 – Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Water Desalination (WP Leader: Andrea Lamberti)

The WP focuses on developing low-impact, solar-driven technologies to extract freshwater from seawater. This includes novel methods like interfacial solar desalination and capacitive deionization, supported by sustainable energy systems, advanced materials, and real-time water quality monitoring.
The work package is structured into five tasks:

  • Task 5.1.1 – Development of porous and functional materials and nanomaterials (Task Leader: Despina Fragouli)
  • Task 5.1.2 – Sustainable energy systems to support water desalination (Task Leader: Andrea Lamberti)
  • Task 5.1.3 – Novel environmentally friendly sensors and protocols for water quality monitoring (Task Leader: Luigino Criante)
  • Task 5.1.4 – Scalable and modular systems for water desalination (Task Leader: Alberto Parmiggiani)
  • Task 5.1.5 – Recovery of lithium from concentrated brines (Task Leader: Andrea Lamberti)

WP5.2 – Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Water Purification (WP Leader: Despina Fragouli)

The WP addresses the treatment of industrial and other wastewater sources. It combines functional materials, multicomponent devices, and innovative processes to remove pollutants effectively, supported by smart sensors, scalable systems, and data-driven approaches.

The work package is structured into four tasks:

  • Task 5.2.1 - 2D and 3D composites for water purification (Task Leader: Andrea Lamberti)
  • Task 5.2.2 - Sensors for real time monitoring of the purification process (Task Leader: Luigino Criante)
  • Task 5.2.3 - Scalable and modular systems for water treatment (Task Leader: Marco Crepaldi)
  • Task 5.2.4 - Data analysis and machine learning for water purification (Task Leader: Sergio Decherchi)
